Hey guys! Today I am back with an author interview: J.C. Welker of the book The Wishing Heart!! All the information for the book is also included below! I can't wait to hear what you guys think about it! (I absolutely love the palette of the cover) What gave you the idea for your story THE WISHING HEART? The premise of the story came about quite clearly, of a girl looking for love and healing through stories and magic, and finds herself immersed in a world where all the myths she only ever read about turn out to be more real than not. In many ways it’s a metaphor of some of my own experiences growing up, at a time where I felt invisible, unloved, was hiding who I was, and like the character I looked to stories to fill that hole. What was your favorite scene to write? It’s a tie between two scenes. First would have to be when Rebel is caught by the police-turned-werewolf, and is chased into the metro tunnels. Action scenes are some of my favorite to write. Second to that would have to be the kiss scene, because in many ways all the slow-burn scenes prior to it were all working towards getting the two characters to that moment. I’ll just leave it at that… Did your main characters give you any trouble? Rebel has a gift for trouble. However, because I hold a special bond with her it was easier for me to find her voice than it was for the other characters. Granted they were all stubborn, and wild and at times weren’t focused on sticking to the story line. What was the hardest scene to edit out? There weren’t any scenes edited out that I felt compelled to keep. However, there was one chapter where I cut out half of it due to the main characters doing nothing but flirting. But the banter and chemistry was so good I tried finding ways to work it in elsewhere. Many authors write about people they know. Who shows up in your stories over and over? All the girls I’ve crushed on over the years, and regretted never talking to. What is your favorite part of the writing process? Drafting and research. Getting to know the characters for the first time while building the world and creating something you’ve only fabricated in your mind. What is the hardest thing about writing? There’s a saying that goes “Don’t compare your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20”. Not letting all the doubt and self-judgment screw with you is one of the hardest parts, because it will hurt your writing and it will show. What has been your most rewarding experience as an author so far? Growing up I never had queer stories to cling to. So being able to know that somewhere someone will read my words and it will give them hope, that maybe my book could help make someone’s life more bearable is truly rewarding. Stories can be healing, and my wish is that this one finds the heart’s who need it. What advice would you give to aspiring writers? One of the best things I’ve read on writing was about Octavia E. Butler. She literally wrote her future into existence with positive thinking. She would write affirmations to herself that she was already a best selling author and that her books would be read by millions. She wrote: “I will find the way to do this. So be it! See to it!” Even amongst rejection, persist to speak your victory. Release Date: 5/1/17 About the book: Winner of the 2016 YARWA Rosemary Awards for paranormal fiction that Mia Siegert (JERKBAIT) calls, “An exhilarating read.” With a book in her bag and a switchblade in her pocket, Rebel's been thieving her way through life while hoping for a cure to fix her ailing heart. But when the bejeweled vase she just tried to hawk turns out to be a jinni's vessel, Rebel gets lost to her world and dragged within another. Now every magical being in the city wants the vase for himself. Thrust into a game of cat and mouse in a world she never knew existed, Rebel must use her uncanny skills to find a way to free Anjeline the Wishmaker. But wishes have consequences. And contracts.
