Forgetting Yesterday by Ava Wood Genre: YA Romance Publication Date: October 28, 2016 Format: I received a copy of the book to review through a blog tour organized by YA Book Bound Tours. You can purchase a copy here: https://www.amazon.com/Forgetting-Yesterday-Broken-Sea-Book-ebook/dp/B01LXXPZEV Summary: Missy Shaw thought she had her life planned out perfectly; do well in school, take her basketball team to state, and get a free ride to college. Her life wasn’t perfect, but it was constant. With her best friend Karley at her side, she could handle anything. After the death of her mother, however, her dad had other plans. Moving Missy from everything she knew in Kansas to the great unknown created a new set of problems. Attending a new school, all she really wanted was to be invisible, but that simple feat proved difficult when she has a run-in with the school’s basketball star, Adam Miller, on her very first day. Adam Miller is every girl's dream; charming, sweet, and gorgeous. And for some reason he’s very interested in Missy. His attentiveness is unnerving as Missy does everything in her power to evade his interest. Living with secrets she’s not willing to share, Missy works to push Adam away in order to keep her family safe. But will keeping secrets really keep her safe? My Thoughts: When Missy’s mother walks out on them again and gets into a horrible accident that kills her, her father is crushed bad. He drinks more than before, and is more abusive. He then uproots her and moves them down to Florida to live with Missy’s aunt. Her father isn’t sober enough of the time to even buy groceries, much less work and constantly mistakes Missy for her mother and then beats her up and calling her ugly names. Missy’s one silver lining out of all this disaster is the school’s basketball star Adam who, in more ways than one, is suited perfectly for Missy. And the Missy’s family gets involved... I liked how Adam brought out Missy’s passion for basketball again and took her in and introduced her to his group of friends when she first arrived on the scene. All his friends actually seemed to be genuine, which I found surprising because under normal circumstances, one of them would probably have problem with her and then everything would blow up. But none of that happened which made me very happy. Missy was the star of her old basketball team, and no doubt she was again the star of the team at her new school. Another thing that I liked was how Adam’s family took her in, especially his father being a father figure to Missy and helping her father to get better. Not to mention, he is also the coach of the boys basketball team and was able to see her play ball as well. For some strange reason, while i was reading, I thought this book was written by Sarah Dessen. I’m not sure what lead me to think that, well actually it’s probably because I was reading a bunch of Sarah Dessen’s books around the same time, but the style of writing Ava Woods has is very similar to that of Sarah Dessen. The book cut off a bit abruptly for my taste, but I believe that this is only the first in a series named Broken By The Sea. The second book is projected to be published by the end of this month (at least according to Goodreads) and I know that I will definitely be getting my hands on a copy as soon as it drops. I cannot wait to find out what happened after the ending. I feel like things are so bad that it can only get better from there, but who knows, I could be very wrong. I didn’t expect myself to get so attached to each of the characters, but just something about it captured me and had me entranced the entire time. The one thing I would change is maybe slow the ending down a little, because so many things happened so quickly that I had to go and re-read some parts 2-3 times again because I just didn’t get what was going on. I love all the different shades of blue on the cover. I think it gives it really that dejected feel that can be sensed throughout the book as well as the sense of starting over again. I haven’t seen the covers for the other books in the series yet but I hope that they’re within the same theme ‘cause it’s killer. Overall, I give the book a 8/10 (4/5 stars). I loved the writing style of the author and the overall feel of the plots; there were just a couple small problems I had, but they were mostly with the characters themselves. If you enjoy reading books by Sarah Dessen or books with that similar style, I say go and check the book out! So what did you think about the review? Will you go and pick it up?
