Weddings, Crushes, and Other Dramas by Emily McKay Genre: YA Contemporary Romance Publication Date: February 13, 2017 Format: I received a copy from the publisher for review. You can purchase a copy of the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Weddings-Crushes-Dramas-Creative-HeArts-ebook/dp/B01N9US5XA/ref=pd_sim_351_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01N9US5XA&pd_rd_r=XPMSXWEQKYDPA9V9BYH9&pd_rd_w=XfZZK&pd_rd_wg=h4nwF&psc=1&refRID=XPMSXWEQKYDPA9V9BYH9 Summary: Falling in love with the best man wasn’t on the program. Willa is happy to be the maid of honor in her dad’s upcoming wedding to uber-celeb Mia McCain. Not as happy about the best man being her soon-to-be stepbrother, the infuriating—and infuriatingly gorgeous—Finn McCain. Every time their paths cross, the attraction simmering between them grows a little harder to ignore. Willa knows all about guys like Finn—they only want what they can’t have. What’s between them isn’t real. Finn has never felt anything more real than what’s developing between him and Willa. Sure, her dad warned him to steer clear, but it’s not just about forbidden temptation. He’s determined to prove to Willa he’s not going anywhere—and that happily-ever-after will always be worth the risk. Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a wedding so crazy it’ll make you laugh, a stepbrother so hot he’ll make you swoon, and a heroine so real she’ll make you cry. My Thoughts: I honestly meant to get this review up about a week ago, but I’ve been so swamped with writing essays that I’ve just gotten behind with writing reviews. But...I’ve had so much time to read books on the bus that I’ve actually finished quite a few books...so look for some of those reviews soon :) Ok well I read this book about 2 weeks ago so it’s not as fresh in my memory but I jotted some notes down so the thoughts are all still here. This book is the 6th book in the Creative Hearts series, written by 4(? I think) Entangled Publishing authors, and the 2nd book in the Will and Finn series. I also got a chance to read the first book in the series so I might have the review for that book on here soon as well. The book picks up where the first one left off, just a little while after so If you haven’t read that book yet, go and pick it up: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015CLB6OA/ref=series_rw_dp_sw The characters are exactly the same ones as from the first book, and most of the premise is introduced in there. One thing that is prominently changed is the amount of chemistry that is between Willa and Finn. Someone cranked it up, and if you somehow missed it before, there is no way you are going to miss it now. Something that I really like is how Finn is able to help Willa adjust and get used to her new rise to fame, as the famous Mia McCain’s future stepdaughter. He’s been able to adjust to how to handle situations smoothly since growing up in the spotlight but One thing that I absolutely love (other than the obvious plot and character attraction of course) is that fact that the book is in Austin and really highlights some of the unique features and landmarks it has, such as the Graffiti park and the lake. The houses around the lake really are beautiful and it’s depicted in the story with Mia’s house. I love how there is more depth to the characters and the love story plot than some of the other books. Willa and Finn both realize for themselves that they have feelings for the other one but they are both shy and don’t want anything to mess up the current bond that they have but also at the same time, I just wanted to take them by the shoulders and shake the heck out of them so they would just voice their opinions. Of course, it all works out in the end so no harm, no foul. I was a bit frustrating to see Willa and Finn kind of dance around each other and took most of the book for anything to really happen but the action kept going. There was not a dull moment as one thing happened right after another. But once they did get together, bAM! It’s amazing. The only thing that the book left me with is wanting to see/know what happens next as Willa and Finn are officially stepsiblings and are also dating. How does their families adjust? Where do they go off next? Ahhh so many questions, no answers at all (as for now). As for the series as a whole, I’ve only read Sloan & Tru and Willa & Finn’s stories but I love how smoothly the stories and plots flow from one to another, especially as they are written by different authors. There isn’t any inconsistencies (that I can find at least) and the story continues to move forward, while still keeping the characters from the other books in the loop. Overall, I give the book a 8/10 (4/5 stars). I loved how happily this book ended for Willa and Finn. If you liked any one of the other books in the Creative Hearts series, then I highly recommend that you go and check this book out. And if not, you might want to start with the first book in the series, or just start with Willa and Finn first and then come to this book and I assure you, you will not be disappointed. I can confidently say that I will be reading and probably reviewing the next book in the series, I believe it’s a story about Dahlia (but I could easily be wrong so don’t come yell at me later if it doesn’t happen). Once again, I would just like to thank Entangled Teen for allowing me to have the opportunity to read and advanced copy of the book and review it. Y’all are the best ever! But when following the clan and obeying their leaders could cost her brother his life, Khya’s home becomes a deadly trap. As objectively as I ever can when my brother is involved. Yorri was the first person to tell me that one day I’d be kaigo, just like our blood-parents, serving the Miriseh and earning high honors in Ryogo. I’d flicked him on the shoulder and said “Of course I will be,” but his faith had been what convinced me I was right. Yorri gets so excited he stumbles over his own words when he’s explaining how he solved some new, impossible puzzle. He devotes himself with frightening fervor to anything that ensnares his arrow-quick mind, but sometimes needs reminding that the rest of the world exists. Forget objectivity. It’s worth the risk. I am going to keep him safe, just like I always have. “You’re going to be late for the vigil if you stand here staring into nothing for much longer, Khya.” I tense, keeping my eyes on the angry, dark, blue white-capped waves. I’d heard the footsteps approaching, but several people had come and gone already and left me alone. Tessen, however, never was able to keep his thoughts inside his head. “I won’t be late.” I answer without looking at him until he moves into my peripheral vision. He leans against the wall to the left of me, his forearms crossed on the ledge and his head tilted up. With his arms folded on the ledge and his body held slightly away from the wall, I can make out the lines of muscle under layers of cloth, all of it hard-earned—though I probably won’t ever admit that to him. I don’t look directly at him, but I turn my head enough to get a better look at his face. He’s taller than me, so looking down on him like this is strange. Seeing him without the hood and atakafu we always wear on duty is stranger. I don’t think I’ve seen his whole face since he became nyshin over a year ago. His thick eyebrows sit low over his deep-set eyes and the line of his nose is straight, because somehow he was always quick enough in training to avoid all but the most glancing blows to his face. The setting sun highlights the red in his terra-cotta skin and makes his oddly pale eyes flash. Usually they’re limestone gray, but now they’re paler than ever and gleaming almost as bright as the sunlight off the ocean. “Shouldn’t you be off training? Or guarding something?” I ask before he speaks. “I am.” He smirks at me. “I’m guarding the mad nyshin girl who’s decided to perch on the walls and imitate a mykyn bird.” “I’m not planning on attempting flight.” I wave my hand at him, trying to brush him off. “You can go, Nyshin-ten.” His lips purse; I hide a smile. It was delightful discovering exactly how annoyed he got when I called him by his class and rank instead of his name. The flash of aggravation disappears quickly, replaced by his more usual sardonic smile. “Should I guess what has you lost in your own head the night of a vigil?” “No. I don’t have that much time.” “Then I won’t guess. Only your brother puts that look on your face.” I look at him, expecting to see mockery in his eyes. There isn’t any. He looks almost…serious? “You’re worried about his herynshi. Unless he’s in trouble again? It’s been a while. He’s overdue.” “It’s been a while because he doesn’t have to deal with people who point out his every mistake anymore. Like you.” Gritting my teeth, I bend to brace my hand on the ledge and jump down to where Tessen stands. At six feet, he’s only an inch or two taller than me. Our eyes are nearly level when I square off against him. “You’re one of the reasons he ever got in trouble in the first place.” “And you spent years trying to make him invisible.” Tessen’s lips thin, and the muscles in his jaw clench for a moment. “Even before you found your wards, you shielded him from everything. What he can do now that you’re not there to monitor his every move should be all the proof you need.” “He would have died if I hadn’t protected him.” Nothing will ever convince me it was wrong to keep him alive. “You can’t seriously be suggesting I should have let that happen?” “No, that isn’t— You don’t even know what he’s capable of! How long has it been since you’ve seen him fight? It’s been—” He steps back, his lips pressed tight and his hands held away from his weapons. “Bellows, Khya. I didn’t come here to fight with you. This isn’t how this was supposed to go.” I blink. “What?” Tessen backing away from an argument? This has to be a trick. “How what was supposed to go?” He shakes his head, a small smile quirking up the corners of his mouth. “I only came to ask if you’d dance with me tonight at the celebration.” He can’t be serious…but there’s not a single sign that he isn’t being sincere. I drop my gaze to hide the confusion that has to show on my face. My focus catches on the pendant gleaming against the undyed cloth of his tunic—a two-inch iron disc etched with crossed zeeka swords. Blood and rot, I hate seeing that around his neck. The zeeka is the symbol of the kaigo; the pendant is a symbol of their students. Tessen is wearing the kaigo-sei pendant that should have been mine. Out of the whole clan, the Miriseh and the kaigo only choose one nyshin-ten per year. His blood-mother, Neeva, is on the kaigo council. Being named a kaigo-sei isn’t a guarantee of advancement, but it is a sign that the leaders of the clan are keeping an eye on you. The kaigo-sei are given extra training and have to face additional tests of magic, skill, and leadership. Not every nyshin named a kaigo-sei student becomes a council member, but no one who isn’t a kaigo-sei will ever become one. I can still earn one—and I will, sooner rather than later—but it seems like they’re already grooming Tessen to take Kaigo Neeva’s place one day. Rot take him, it was supposed to be me. Swallowing the fruitless envy building in my chest, I raise my eyes to meet Tessen’s again. “I don’t make promises I don’t intend to keep.” “But that’s not a no, so I’ll ask again tonight.” He smiles, inclines his head, and then walks away whistling. I hate that sound, and I’m almost positive he knows that. What did you think about the book? Will you go and pick it up? Tell me what else you want to see and I will have another post up real soon! ~Brooke Hi Everyone! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve posted on here but no fear, there’s plenty of posts coming your way soon! I’m very excited for February because I’ve teamed up with some awesome people with some amazing book review coming your way as well as some guest posts by authors that I won’t mention just yet but get excited because they’re all pretty great!!
Much of this post may seem like I’m just making excuses for myself, and I’m not going to lie, that’s what some of them are. I’ve just gotten so far behind that I had to sit back and get my personal life back on track that I’ve completely neglected my blog. First things first however, let’s do a quick recap of January. January came and left like a freight train. Like I was hit by something and I still don’t know what’s going on or how. School started up and it was a lot harder than I expected. Many people had told me that second semester sophomore year was going to be hard but this was a whole different level. I reviewed a few books in January, but not in the numbers like I had in 2016, where I posted about 4-5 times a week. At the end of January and beginning of February, I didn’t post anything or write any reviews for my blog at all, but instead focused a bit more on my mental health. I’ve had the same wake-up/bed time routines for the past 4-5 years now and just now it’s starting to actually get to me of how little sleep I get and how much brain power is actually needed to get me through the day, and I just simply do not have that. I started having mental breakdowns near the end of the January and that was not good at all. Anyways, I’ve been working through that, trying to get more sleep and keep my grades up all at the same time. Now as I have already made commitments to several authors and publicists with reviews and guest posts and other stuff that I don’t want to back out of now, or postpone, I will continue to get all of those posts up at a somewhat timely manner. If you have emailed me and I have not responded, or I agreed to something but I haven’t actually done it yet, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE email me again just to remind me because my brain has been everywhere and I haven’t been using any planning type thing to keep track of everything. There was about a week where I just ignored all my emails and twitter etc… just because I couldn’t keep up. I’ve already planned out about a week to 2 weeks in March that I’m going to take an actual planned hiatus, just until spring break rolls around (which should be the 3rd week of March) just so I can keep up with school work. I’ve also started a couple new activities this semester that I am loving so far but is very time consuming. Also some of ya’ll know this but I play both piano and flute and competition/contest/festival season is starting now so a lot more time is needed for me to put into practicing. One thing that I’m super glad to have is the time to read more books that I want to read. Not that I dislike reading books for review, but sometimes just knowing the commitment that I’m making for reading a book takes the fun out of it. I’ve read at least 10 books that I’ve had my eye on for a while, and while there is a good chance that I may never review most of them on this blog, I have a couple discussion posts that I want to write. But who knows? I might get productive one of these days and write a review for each of the books. Yall, I’m so, so grateful for each and every one of you so much, I can’t fully express it. I have a lot more to come on this blog, and other future plans as well that is going to be so exciting and fun, and I just can not wait to be able to reveal them to you. I have a couple posts currently scheduled and I have a couple more that needs to be written. SO tell me, what are you looking forward to? What have you been up to these days? I haven’t had as much interaction with all of you in a while so I’m behind :) Anyways, comment down below your thoughts and what books I should read next or find me on social media @BrookeEvans2001 on Twitter and @thecozylittlebooknook on Instagram. ALSO!! If you didn’t already know, I have another instagram account that I’m currently using @OfficialBrookeEvans to post pics of what I’m doing, outside of the bookish world and I’m loving it! Tell me what else you want to see and I will have another post up real soon! ~Brooke Any Boy But You by Julie Hammerle Genre: YA Contemporary Romance Publication Date: February 13, 2017 Format: I received a copy of the book in advance to review from the publicist at Entangled. You can purchase the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Any-Boy-but-Julie-Hammerle-ebook/dp/B01N25EGAO/ Summary: Elena Chestnut has been chatting with an anonymous boy late into the night. It’s a very You’ve Got Mail situation, and she has no idea who he is. He can’t be Oliver Prince, hot-and-bashful son of the family running the rival sporting goods store. Their fancy sales strategies are driving Elena’s family out of business. Elena’s mystery boy has teamed up with her in their latest sales strategy, an augmented reality game, to help her win the grand-prize plane tickets. Money’s so tight Elena’s going to miss senior year spring break with her friends if she can’t win this game. The girl Oliver's fallen head-over-heels for online had better not be Elena Chestnut. She's his angry, vindictive Latin tutor, the daughter of his dad’s business rival, and the one girl he’d never even think of kissing. She’s definitely not his online crush, because that girl is funny, sweet, and perfect. When Oliver asks to reveal their names at the Valentine’s Day dance, their IRL relationship will either ruin what they have online, or they’ll discover just how thin the line between love and hate really is. Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains swearing, snowball fights, and sexual tension that could melt the North Pole. Read at your own risk. My Thoughts: I like the concept of the feuding families, kind of Romeo and Juliet-esque with the twist of modern day technology set in a tiny winter town. Many of you know how much I love books set about hockey and skating, and so the lack of that was a little disappointing to me when I read the description because honestly it looked a little bland, I just knew that I had to give it a try because of the characters that were described. So while there wasn’t any of the actual winter sport in this book, it was still a really good book about a winter romance. The book introduced a hella lot of characters, most of whom I’ve forgotten about. The main two characters are Oliver, the son of the own of Prince’s sporting goods, and then Elena, the daughter of the owners of Chestnuts sporting goods, which ironically are right across the street from each other. Granted, the whole population store-wise of that town is on that one street so there wasn’t many other places they could have been. If you liked playing Pokemon Go this past summer, then you will definitely like this book because the entire concept is just a huge pokemon go game in the midst of a tiny town. This was a well written book, I found just a few inconsistencies in the plot, but nothing too major that bothered me that much. Some of the plot logistics seemed to be a bit iffy, like something would happen and the something else contradicts that bit of history, but I’m not sure if that is due to my own mis reading or if the holes are actually there. Nonetheless, it wasn’t that big a deal and was still fun to piece together all the little bits of family history that was thrown in. Speaking of family history, there was a lot of things that went wrong in the previous generation that creates most of the problems of why Oliver and Elena couldn’t be together in the first place between their two sporting goods stores. I mean, the ending was pretty much predictable from the beginning. Actually the entire book for that matter was pretty much predictable but it was still fun to see how everything played out. As it is an Entangled book, the two main characters fall for each other by the end I do wish we got to see more of Oliver’s side and his personal side such as recalling how his family was like before they moved to North Pole, Minnesota. The info that we got from him was pretty good though so I guess I can’t complain. Oliver seems like the type of straight up jerk, you know the type--athletic, tall, good looking, blond with blue or green eyes, doesn’t care about anything at all except his own popularity, etc...and while he does meet some of the physical traits, he surprised me by being the shy type, and while doesn’t care much about his other grades, coding is an integral part of his life. Overall, I give the book a 8/10. I really like the concept of it, and can not wait to read the next one in the soon to become series. I really liked the characters by the end, and the fact that we see a whole bunch of people, actually it feels like we came across the entire population of the tiny town while Oliver and Elena were out on their chase. I highly recommend that you go and read the book because it’s amazing and you do not want to get left behind by being the only person that hasn’t read it yet. I’m kidding, but go, read the book! Now the next thing that I’m hoping for is a book about Regina Price, Oliver's sister and her relationship with Stan, the hockey player that is a big deal in this town. I also have a guest post by the author talking about how this little town of North Pole Minnesota came to be, her inspiration for all the characters, etc… as well as the plans for the future books in the series. The post also talks a little bit about her writing process for the series, and boy can I just tell you right now, it’s an interesting one for sure. That post will come sometime next week so keep your eyes out for that! What did you think about the review? Will you go and pick it up? Tell me what else you want to see and I will have another post up real soon! ~Brooke Hey Everyone! I've been gone for a little while to get my personal life under control for a few weeks now and I took a little of a unannounced hiatus but I'm back and am going to start posting a little more now. Today though, I have a guest post from the wonderful Dani Hoots about her writing process for her newest book Trapped in wonderland. All links and info will be below her post: Thank you Brooke for letting me have the chance to write a post on how I got into writing and my writing process. I am very grateful for reviewers that ask me to write a post or do a Q&A with them, so thank you again. Ever since I was very young I found myself making up stories to pass the times. I didn’t have many friends growing up and lived up on a hill in the middle of the woods, so there were only a couple of kids nearby, and even then they were about half a mile away. Things like mythology, especially astronomy related mythology, inspired me. I used to look up to the sky and think about the moon and how there could be a princess living there (like Sailor Moon) and believed in witches and ghosts and gods and vampires and so on. That belief in the supernatural really inspired me and that is probably the main reason I usually always write fantasy or sci-fi. I love the mythical and creating stories that I wish were reality. I never lost that growing up, so here I am. Throughout growing up though, I wanted to be a lot of different things, such as an astrologist, anthropologist, architect, and aerospace engineer, but thorough it all I still always wanted to be an author (and some reason everything that started with an “A” and ironically I also married an accountant). I went to college originally for engineering, then physics… then astrophysics and then got a degree in anthropology. But right before graduation I got diagnosed with Sjögrens Syndrome and decided to fulfill my life long dream of becoming an author. That was five years ago and I have never looked back. I did still end up getting a Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning as a back up plan, and I definitely don’t regret doing that. So now I spend my time volunteering for the library system and writing full-time. A lot of my inspiration comes from mythology, folklore, and from dreams actually. For example, in The Quest, the Sanshlian world was inspired off of a dream and song by Escape Key called Shadowbeast. I also get inspiration from songs and sometimes just out of thin air to be honest. A lot of things inspire me and I feel very lucky to be like that. After I get inspired I start to think out plot and what I want my beginning and ending to be, then the characters seem to fill in the rest. I sometimes outline, sometimes don’t. It really depends on the story. I research during this time as well. For Trapped in Wonderland I want to say I outlined but went off course a few times. There is definitely a lot of rewriting in my stories as some characters decide they want a bigger part in the action and go a different way. My main piece of advice to authors starting out is to really listen to your characters, as they will tell you when a scene is wrong. You can definitely not force them to do anything or they will put up a fuss. From there, I mainly focus on dialogue and character development, then go back to add descriptions. This is probably why my scenes tend to be dialogue or monologue heavy versus description heavy. After I finish my manuscript, I go back through to put what I need to edit, then edit from the last chapter to the first. The reason for this is that I found that I always got drained by the time I reached the end, so if I start there in my second or third time through, I know it will be as strong as my beginning. I hope you enjoyed my guest post about my writing and writing process and hope you enjoy my new book, Trapped in Wonderland. If you have any questions or comments, please check out my Facebook page or website. WONDERLAND CHRONICLES: Trapped in Wonderland by Dani Hoots Rerelease 02/01/17; Dani Hoots; Genre: YA Fantasy; Word Count: 65,000; ISBN 978-1-942023-45-6 Description: Meredith Alice Hughes has found herself falling through a portal and into Wonderland. There, she finds some of her classmates, who are actually fictional characters from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, and they use a potion to make her forget everything. Everything would have been fine, that is, until the White Rabbit tries to murder her and she finds herself in Wonderland once more. Apparently, according to a prophecy, Alice is the only one who can save Wonderland from the Cirque de Rêves, a group that is trying to destroy and takeover the world. Little does Alice know that not only is Wonderland in danger, but her home world as well, because all the citizens in Wonderland represent the dreams of every living human in the real world, and when they start to disappear, so does the hope of every living thing. Will Alice believe in herself enough to defeat the Cirque de Rêves? Or will she fall victim to the dark thoughts that reside in her heart? Goodreads/Amazon/Amazon UK/Website So what do y'all think about the book so far? I had planned on posting the review along with this post today but due to recent events I just didn't get a chance to finish the book or write the review.
