Hi Everyone! I’m back today and this post is going to be a little bit different that what I’ve been having up on here in awhile. So a rep from Leesa, a mattress company reached out to me and asked if I would like to write a blog post about my perfect day in, with my bed and books of course. So is some of the essentials that I would need, if this day would ever happen (and we all know, with my schedule, even sleep is a little hard to get to). So first of all, I would need any many pillows, so I can make a pillow fort of sorts to stay in all day, and pillows so I can prop up my books and my kindle, making it as easy as possible and to avoid any hand cramps. Then I need blankets so if I’m reading a book with a really bad break up scene or a horror scene, I can just wrap myself up into a blanket cocoon to try and shield myself from it. Of course, we cannot forget about the books. I need many many books to keep me from having to leave the bed all day. I just want a bunch of YA contemporary books to read, as well as romance books. You know what’s even better though? YA Contemporary Romance books. So I would get as many paperbacks as I can get, and because books get expensive, I need my kindle as well because kindle books are usually noticeably cheaper. (I’m not cheap, I’m just broke :)) Now what if my kindle or phone dies? I need my charger. While I’m on that topic, I also need a bedside table to keep all the books from piling up on my bed and to put food on. Speaking of food, I’m gonna need food. I literally cannot go 3 hours without food. Let’s see, what food do I need? Since I’m a horrible cook, I’d probably just buy pre made food from the store and keep it on the table for when I’m hungry. Also I need water bottles so I can stay hydrated. Wait, but then if I drink too much water, I’d have to go to the bathroom. Well that’s unavoidable so I guess I’d have to get up to use the restroom. And other than reading, what else do I love the most? My blog of course. So I would also need my laptop and its charger (as it’s battery life is only about 5-6 hours and if I’m staying on my bed all day, that’s not enough) so I can review the books, and try to review every single one of them. And while I’m reviewing, I need my planner to keep track of which books I’ve read, which reviews I need/have already written and when they are scheduled to go up. I think that’s all of my essentials for a perfect day in. Of course, I can’t forget about the mattress :) if you guys want to check out Leesa mattresses, you can read about them here. They have a really cool give back program where they donate 1 mattress for every 10 they sell. Let me know what YOUR essentials are for a day in and staying in bed all day. What books would you want? What food? What mattress in fact? Have you done this before? I guess I could keep dreaming but it’s just reality that this probably can’t ever become a reality for me. The Quest by Dani Hoots Genre: YA Scifi Publication Date: October 1, 2016 Format: I was given a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review You can purchase the book here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/194202343X/ref=x_gr_w_bb?ie=UTF8&tag=x_gr_w_bb-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=194202343X&SubscriptionId=1MGPYB6YW3HWK55XCGG2 The book is also free on KindleUnlimited. Summary: Eleven Years ago, my life was ripped away from me. My father, my brother, my humanity. Everything. I was thrown into the Kamps, created to become a mindless machine. But I fought against it, not letting them take away my memories of the past. And I succeeded. It has been seven years since I was taken out of the Kamps and made into the Emperor's Shadow. Now I only take orders from him, and him alone, without question. That is, until my brother, whom I thought was dead, shows up and kidnaps me in order to help him find some long lost planet that our father used to tell stories about. According to the legend, any who find the planet Sanshli can rewrite the past, and my brother wants to use it to destroy the Empire. My loyalty will always be to the Emperor, but what if this planet is real? And the longer I stay with my brother, the more I begin to find that the Emperor has been keeping secrets from me. But I can't turn my back on him... Or can I? *This is the second publication of "The Quest" by Dani Hoots* My Thoughts: This review is so, so overdue. I read the book back in November around Thanksgiving but I just couldn’t seem to find the time to actually write the review for the book so it’s been a while since I read it but this review will still reflect my thoughts from then. This review is also a little shorter than most of my other ones. So Dani reached out to me a long time ago and asked if I was interested in reading The Quest, and after reading just the summary, I was hooked. This isn’t the type of book that I’m usually into reading but I’m really glad that I read it. The main character is Arcadia, a freaking headstrong girl, which is something I love to see in a female main character. Everything was torn away from her 11 years ago when an attack hit her planet and she was taken and trained to become basically a machine for the Emperor. She’s not one of the most powerful people and the only female at that. But then, when her brother, whom she thought was dead from 11 years ago suddenly shows up and is prepared to fight the emperor for the planet their father told them about, Arcadia is left with the most difficult choice ever. Is she going to stick with family, or the emperor. Just within the first few scenes after the attack, we see just how powerful Arcadia is because grown men are having to follow her words. Of course, not all of them like to, and some try to ‘take back their rightful power’ just because they’re male, and a female should not be in charge. This book also focuses a little on family honor, in such that Arcadia was torn between helping her family, because, well, they are her family. I found this book to be different from other sci-fi ones that I’ve read mainly because of that. There was just something that was missing for me in the book. I can’t quite pinpoint it but it just seems like a tiny little something is missing. But with that said, this book was well written and made me like it (and if you’ve been on this blog long enough you’ll find that I don’t usually like to read sci-fi books). I believe that this book is the first in the series so I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Overall, I give the book a 7/10 (4/5 stars). It was a well written book and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series because I really want to know more about what happens next/ what the future holds for all of the characters. If you like sci fi books, then I recommend that you give this one a try and I’m pretty sure that you’ll like it a lot. What did you think about the review? Will you go and pick it up? A cold shiver hits me, making me shudder. I think about Toby. About the stupid kiss. That first date we went on, when we had such a great time. I think about Aunt Shawna’s words of wisdom about finding a man you can be yourself around. I wasn’t myself around Toby. I couldn’t be; I was too scared to let him see the real me because there’s no way he’d like the real me. So, I showed him a fake me. One who is nice and happy and doesn’t complain about things. I was sweet, and dare I say charming. I thought I did everything right. So why did he dump me? Why did he even like me in the first place? That promposal was so sweet and so cute and I’ve never been treated like that in my life. No guy has ever gone out of their way to surprise me with something special. On my sixteenth birthday, Bennet surprised me with sixteen dozen pink roses, my favorite. Then he took me and Ashlyn out to Shoguns, my favorite hibachi restaurant that we never get to go to because it’s so expensive. Later, Ashlyn told me he’d worked his ass off mowing lawns for the neighbors for six months to afford my birthday present. That’s probably the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for me, but Bennet is my friend. It was fun having Toby pay attention to me. He was a guy who liked me because he wanted to, not because he was my lifelong pal. And now he’s back to just being the guy in my homeroom class. This little voice nags at me in my subconscious. It’s asking me why the hell I’d consider going to prom with a guy who dumped me. I guess the smart thing to do for my heart would be to tell Toby to piss off. But I don’t really care about my feelings right now. I want to go to prom with Toby because being around him makes me feel special. Cool. Popular in a way I’ve never been before. So what if my heart is sad that he dumped me? I’ll find a way to get over it. I hope. SO what do you think about the book? Will you go and pick it up? ~Brooke Remnants of Yesterday (Broken by the Sea #3) by Ava Wood Genre: YA Contemporary Romance Publication Date: January 6, 2017 Format: I received a copy of the book as part of a blog tour organized by YA Bound Book Tours You can purchase a copy of the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Remnants-Yesterday-Broken-Sea-Book-ebook/dp/B01MQSV03G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482284006&sr=8-2&keywords=remnants+of+yesterday Summary: Missy Shaw has lived through her fair share of heartache and abuse, mostly at the hands of her own father. After finally taking a stand against her abusers, Missy is faced with a new dilemma when her father unexpectedly falls ill. Longing to take care of the man who’s never really been a father to her, she’s forced to make a difficult decision that could cause a cataclysmic collision with her past and her future. Now that Adam Miller was a major fixture in Missy’s life, making those hard decisions shouldn’t be so difficult, but when Missy heads to Tampa for college and Adam returns to Kansas, she’s left feeling vulnerable and alone. Moving forward is harder than she imagined when the demons from her past continue to haunt her. In this gripping finale to the Broken by the Sea trilogy, find out if Missy is finally able to find her happy ending, or if the demons of her past become the nightmares of her future. My Thoughts: This third book in the Broken by the Sea trilogy was by far the best one. Like this is the book that made me decide that I really do love this series, because I was kind of iffy on that with the first 2 books. This one made reading the first book worth it. I get that sometimes when reading a series, the first book has to set up everything for the rest of the series and going back to it, I see all of these different elements. Needless to say, the third book was the best one. First things first, it is so good to see Missy come to her senses about her aunt, and stand p to her and her blood family about what she wants in life and how she has people who she can depend on. And after meeting her aunt and father’s mother, I can see exactly where her aunt gets all of her horribleness from. It is also really good to see Missy FINALLY realize that her friends and the Millers will always be there for her, and it’s time for her to accept that and move on from her actual family. Anyways, though, in this finale of the series, we see Missy all grown up and in college (can I use that phrase even though I’m younger than Missy? Oh well, i’m gonna anyways). Then all of a sudden, she receives the information that her dad is deadly ill, and only has a couple months to live. With this information, Missy starts to question her priorities and thinks that her rightful place should be by her father, but due to the persuasion of Lorraine, Missy stays at college and comes home every weekend. Then, as if she couldn’t get any more information, she finds out that Lorraine and her dad have been married for several months, and they’ve known about her father’s disease for a while. While this is probably warranted, given how much Missy has gone through, she sometimes acts like a 5 year old who wasn’t given any candy and them promptly throwing a fit about it, refusing to come out of her room, or in Missy’s case, crawl back into the hollow shell of her former self. Some old characters come back, that we saw in the first book but not in the second one, such as Missy’s Aunt and her boyfriend, and Karley, Missy’s best friend from Kansas. I only wish that we got to see more of her. She showed up in a few scenes but I really wanted to see more of her and how their relationship was back in Kansas. Of course, Adam shows back up again, why wouldn’t he and that story line alone is enough to make you cry. On another note, I want to see their wedding!!! Like SO BAD! Maybe another short installment could be coming? My fingers are crossed. I feel like with both of their unique backgrounds, and how the wedding for Steven and Lindsay played out in the previous book, it is one event that we probably do not want to miss. Oh, also can I just say, Jennie and Terrence make such a good couple. I would love to see their relationship beyond what happened in this book, and them in the future, and I wouldn’t mind a few (or a whole ton) of cameos about Missy and Adam *wink wink* Overall as a series, it was a very real book, meaning that we see all the good as well as all the ugly, and trust me, with this series, there was a lot of ugly things that happened. The struggle we see in the book is really real, especially with the jealousy that tended to creep into Missy’s head every once in a while. Also I don’t think I mentioned this in my other review for this series but this book is definitely targeted towards a more mature audience as it deals with several abusive relationships, drinking, cussing, etc… I give the book a 9/10 (5/5 stars). This was a great way to end out the series, even if there are no more installments in the series (but I’m still hoping!!) It makes the entire series worth it and is sure to be a tear-jerker due to all the emotions that you will be feeling. So to keep it short, GO READ THE BOOK AND YOU WILL LOVE IT!!! Her camera has always been her shield against getting too close to anyone, but she didn’t expect the hot teen translator who has an ability to see past her walls. Elias needs his job as a translator to provide for his siblings. He can’t afford to break the rule forbidding him from socializing with a client. Except this girl Myra insists on going outside the city to capture the perfect picture, and he steps in as her guide in order to keep her safe. The deeper they travel into the country, the harder they fall for each other. Now they’re both taking risks that could cost each other their dreams. If they get too close—it could ruin both their lives. Disclaimer: Caution! Reading this book will open your heart and inspire you to take risks. Only those searching for true love should proceed. My Thoughts: As it being an Entangled book, I was fully ready going in to have my heart broken and the pieced back together within 2-3 hours span of time, and then left wanting more. Some part of this statement was true for this book while another part left quite a lot to be desired from it. Let’s start off with the things that I didn’t like. To start off with, the events leading up to everything seemed to be maneuvered in such an unrealistic way. To top that off, the romance itself was really forced in the writing. It didn’t happen naturally like a “oh hey, they got a connection and they start hanging out and then they’re dating” sort of way but instead Myra called Elias cute without realizing that he understood her and then suddenly they’re kissing?? Like, back up a second, what just happened there? The dual point of view really didn’t do much for this book. There really wasn’t much to needed from Elias’ perspective because it really was nothing new.I usually love how the different points of views give different insight on the same events as well as add other scenes that we wouldn’t see otherwise as a single POV book but with this one, it was just repeating the same thing OVER AND OVER AGAIN in both POVs. There wasn’t even any difference in the two sides. This book played into depths of cliches that I honestly didn’t like at all. There was the whole thing with Myra being upset because she stands out in the US as well as in Haiti because of her skin color that I found to be completely unnecessary and just a little racist (and I’m not one to find things like that racist or super sensitive about books like that). Another thing that I would have loved to see was more of the imagery of Haiti’s landscape. The few that we saw were raw and beautiful but I really wish the author described some of the lesser great things that’s the ‘real Haiti’ Myra keeps talking about. I read in the author bio that the author actually spent time on the island doing work similar to Myra’s and I think this book provided with an amazing opportunity to describe in words the landscape and the humanity that she saw. The one good thing that I like was I liked the ending and wanted to know more about what happened when Myra’s family moved to Haiti and the project they started and how Elias and his family fit into that and how it benefitted Haiti as a whole. I think that this part would have made for an amazing additional 2-3 chapters at least. The writing itself was pretty good, but nothing really new or special. It really lacked in Elias’ point of view but in what we did get from Myra’s point of view, it was really well written. Overall, I give the book a 4/10 (2/5 stars). I was really expecting more from it and the book just didn’t do it for me. If you are used to the traditional YA books that Entangled publishes, then be ready to get a little bit disappointed in this one but nonetheless, if you want to read something difference, then you should definitely give this book a try! I felt more anxious than I had when we’d first started the evening. The “end of the date” moment was near, and all I could think about was a possible kiss and Courtney’s advice of melting into it. I had a terrible fear that I was going to do the exact opposite and be as stiff as a new pair of skates. We pulled up in front of my house, and I rubbed my hands on my sweater. Braden shut off the engine, and I longed to know his next move. Was he going to say goodnight there or was he going to walk me to the door? He stepped out of the Jeep, answering my question. I climbed out, and he took my hand as we walked up to the porch, lit only by the dim gaslight lamps on either side of the front door. My pulse was seriously racing. I hadn’t been that nervous since I’d skated at the Olympics three years ago. Braden faced me, and I looked up into his soft brown eyes. I could barely catch my breath because my heart was beating so fast. I’m going to have a heart attack and die before I even have the chance to kiss a boy. “I thought your dad might be out here with a breathalyzer,” he said. “My dad actually did that with one of my sisters’ boyfriends.” “Oh, no.” I laughed, but I secretly hoped that Dad might pop through the front door and save me from this nerve-wracking moment. “I’m really glad we got to hang out tonight,” Braden said. “Me too. I had a great time.” He squeezed my hand and shifted his weight, and I sensed he was anxious, too, but probably nowhere near my level of freak-out. My face and neck were growing hotter by the second, and I prayed Braden couldn’t see how red they were in the low light. “I’d love to see you again,” he said, stepping closer. I nodded. “Definitely.” He smiled and inched further forward, and I felt myself tightening with nerves. It was the same sensation I got sometimes before a critical jump in my programs, and it often meant I ended up sprawled on the ice. What if Braden kissed me and I made it just as much of a disaster? Return to Yesterday (Broken by the Sea #2) by Ava Wood Genre: YA Romance Publication Date: November 25, 2016 Format: I received a copy of the book as part of a book tour organized by YA Bound Books. You can purchase a copy of the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Return-Yesterday-Broken-Sea-Book-ebook/dp/B01N1EYOX6/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1483483800&sr=1-4&keywords=Return+to+Yesterday Summary: After Adam Miller walked out of Missy Shaw’s life her junior year, she thought her world had ended. With her father’s relentless drinking and Missy’s numerous empty relationships, she’s learned to live her life as a hollow shell. Never feeling seems a whole lot easier than opening herself up to the emotions that tear her apart. She’s made a comfortable life for herself, going to school, working, and spending her lonely nights in the arms of her co-worker, Marco. Everything is going just the way she likes until graduation nears and Adam waltzes back into town on the arm of Lindsay Dumont. With a single look, all her feelings for him come flooding back and being hollow suddenly isn’t so easy. His return opens up old wounds that Missy fears may never heal. Scars she’s fought so hard to bury deep inside. When all of her old memories dangle in front of her, she’s forced to find a way to bury her feelings for Adam while holding onto what’s left of her heart. My Thoughts: So I’m reading this book as part of a blog book tour that I’m part of next week for Remnants of Yesterday by Ava Wood so that review will come then. I also reviewed the first book a while ago which you can find here: Forgetting Yesterday. But...for now, here’s the review for Return to Yesterday! I didn’t enjoy the first book in the series that much but I kinda wanted to see what happened to Missy and Adam’s relationship as he went off to college and she was left behind with her father and aunt. The prologue that started off the book tides us over from the ending of the first book to the beginning of this one, and it starts off with some good news that Missy’s father is sober and has a job and a girlfriend. And then chapter 1 just has to go and ruin any good things that Missy has. Since that relationship ended, I was really glad to see that Missy became friends with her dad’s ex-girlfriend’s daughter Jennie, and while she doesn’t know all of Missy’s past, she is still able to be there for Missy when she needs to be. I have to mention, there is a heck of a lot of new people that are introduced in this book, but we get to see a lot more of the people from book one, especially the Millers. I really like the Millers because they are genuinely nice people that care and look out for Missy. I feel bad for Missy because she just cannot seem to catch a break with the bad luck, but then again, she also consciously puts herself into those situations so I don’t feel that bad. I feel like all her problems (or at least 90% of them) would be solved if she just cut out the people that she knows are bad in her life, and actually listens to the people that she should trust. I don’t want to say what happened but in a nutshell, when Adam gets back from college, Missy is under the perception that he is engaged to someone else and so she tries to keep her distance, but every time she ends up back where her heart wants her to be. This event puts them all into awkward positions with Missy throwing anger fits every few chapters. I predicted the whole thing with the wedding and Lindsay way ahead of time, but the author kept throwing us curve balls making me second guess myself. Overall I give the book a 7/10 (4/5 stars). I liked this book better than the first one. It seemed to have more depth, and more secrets were revealed, although a lot of the same events happened over and over again. The writing style seemed to also mature a bit from the first book to this one, which I found fitting for the process Missy went through. I definitely was looking forward to the 3rd book (and that review will be out next Friday so stay tuned for that later). So what did you think about this review?
